After all, he’s the creator of some of the best horror content on the streamer. And he’s the one behind bringing The Fall of the House of Usher to life from page to screen. But it’s all thanks to iconic poet and author Edgar Allan Poe’s short story of the same name that we’re getting the television adaptation.

Lenore goes to see her dad who’s bowling in their house, asking if a doctor is ever coming. Frederick basically blows her off, however, saying that Morrie is doing well and the doctors will come if they need to. Lenore apologizes to her dad for all of the loss he’s experiencing, but he assures her he’s okay. He’s acting very weird, likely because of the drugs, and continues to bowl instead of comforting his daughter.
Characters
Under the watchful eye of the caretaker, Nurse Thatcher (Beth Grant), Jill appears to be haunted by Maddy's ghost. Madeline soon dies, and Roderick decides to bury her temporarily in the tombs below the house. He wants to keep her in the house because he fears that the doctors might dig up her body for scientific examination, since her disease was so strange to them. The narrator helps Roderick put the body in the tomb, and he notes that Madeline has rosy cheeks, as some do after death.
Character descriptions
The narrator also realizes suddenly that Roderick and Madeline were twins. He leads the narrator to the window, from which they see a bright-looking gas surrounding the house. The narrator tells Roderick that the gas is a natural phenomenon, not altogether uncommon. The narrator quickly closes the window and tells Usher that it is merely an electrical phenomenon or gases expelled from the tarn. The story describes a hero, Ethelred, who breaks down the door to an evil hermit’s dwelling after being denied entrance (21). During the reading, the narrator believes he hears strange noises coming from deep within the house.

Bill comes home to see if Tammy is okay but she doesn’t want him there and tells him to leave. He tells her that they shouldn’t be fighting amid all of the deaths and that he loves her, to which Tammy says she does not love him back. He asks what he did that was so bad and she explains how much Goldbug means to her.

Both of these poems counteract and therefore predict the plotline of the story. The poem “Mad Trist” is about breaking into the dwelling of a hermit by Ethelred and mirrors Madeline’s escape from the tomb. Some scholars and critics argue that the character of Madeline does not exist at all. They have reduced her to the shared figment of the imagination of the narrator and Roderick. However, Madeline appears to be central to the claustrophobic and symmetrical logic of the story.

Rather than convey a lesson, Poe's story explores gothic elementsof the supernatural and evil to convey this tale of horror. Loosely based on various works by 19th-century author Edgar Allan Poe (most prominently the eponymous 1840 short story), the series adapts otherwise unrelated stories and characters by Poe into a single nonlinear narrative set from 1953 to 2023. It recounts both the rise to power of Roderick Usher, the powerful CEO of a corrupt pharmaceutical company and his sister Madeline Usher, the firm's genius COO, and the events leading to the deaths of all six of Roderick’s children. It stars an ensemble cast led by Carla Gugino as a mysterious woman plaguing the Ushers, Bruce Greenwood as an elderly Roderick and Mary McDonnell as an elderly Madeline. Having deposited our mournful burden upon tressels within this region of horror, we partially turned aside the yet unscrewed lid of the coffin, and looked upon the face of the tenant.
One night, while Usher and the narrator are reading, Usher tells him that Madeline has died. The narrator is shocked when he hears that Usher plans to temporarily keep her body in one of the house’s vaults. Usher says that Madeline’s doctor suggested this, and the narrator believes it reasonable.
Roderick Usher
Tammy picks up a fire poker and tries to hit Verna but misses, following her voice through her house. She hits a mirror with the fire poker and a shard of glass gets stuck in her face, but she’s too distracted by the woman’s voice. She keeps trying to find her and then gets a piece of glass stuck in her foot before she continues swinging the fire poker all around. Verna disappears, and Tammy jumps on her bed and hits the ceiling mirror with the fire poker, falling back onto the bed and getting stabbed with huge shards of glass in the process. Frederick then goes to see Morrie when Lenore isn’t in the room and does cocaine in front of her.

From his arrival, the narrator notes the family's isolationist tendencies, as well as the cryptic and special connection between Madeline and Roderick, the final living members of the Usher family. Throughout the tale and her varying states of consciousness, Madeline completely ignores the narrator's presence. After Roderick Usher claims that Madeline has died, the narrator helps Usher entomb Madeline in an underground vault despite noticing Madeline's flushed, lifelike appearance. Might we then interpret Roderick as a symbol of the conscious mind – struggling to conceal some dark ‘secret’ and make himself presentable to his friend, the narrator – and Madeline as a symbol of the unconscious? Note how Madeline is barely seen for much of the story, and the second time she appears she is literally buried (repressed?) within the vault.
